Terms of Reference for the recruitment of 4 data collectors for the Study on the Effects of Climate Change on Children in the Maldives

  • Purpose of assignment
  • Background

    The study aims to provide an overview of the impacts of Climate Change on children in the Maldives and propose recommendations to address climate change-related vulnerabilities and appropriate strategies to address the impacts, which may potentially cause hindrances to the achievement of child rights and wellbeing agenda of the country.

    The study comes in a time where in recent years high frequency low impact hydro-meteorological hazards due to changes in weather patterns had been observed occurring in the Maldives, more often causing coastal flooding and storm surges resulting in inundation of households, lifeline infrastructure such as health centers, schools and increased incidences of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea which impact the lives of children and women.

    An International Consultant has been recruited, seconded by a National Consultant to conduct the study and provide overall guidance on the research to be conducted in the 6 selected islands:

  • Ha. Thuraakunu
  • Hdh. Kulhudhufushi
  • Baa. Hithaadhoo
  • AA. Rasdhoo
  • Ghn. Fuvahmulah
  • S. Hithadhoo
  • What is the basic project objective to which the consultancy is related
  • The 4 data collectors will be responsible for the household data collection in the selected 6 islands.

  • Supervisor
  • The 4 data collectors will be supervised by the National Consultant recruited to support the study. Guidance and oversight will be provided by the officer-in-charge of the study at UNICEF Maldives.

  • Major tasks to be accomplished

  • Collect data from approximately 486 households (in all 6 selected islands) based on the data collection instruments developed as per instructions provided by the consultants undertaking the study. Each data collector will conduct/complete at least 122 interviews/questionnaires
  • Submit completed questionnaires/records from field work
  • Provide input to consultants to develop analytical report

  • Collect data using data collection instruments in 6 selected islands
  • Transcription of interviews to English
  • Provide input to analytical report
  • 4 weeks

  • Conduct 122 interviews in 6 islands (27 interviews in each island)
  • Oral translations of interview findings into English
  • Qualifications or specialized knowledge and/or experience required
  • Qualifications:

  • Completed GCE A’ Level or equivalent
  • Past work experience in research data collection/survey would be an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Dhivehi, both oral and written
  • Able to work in a team and follow detailed instructions
